Carbon Monoxide Alarm Detector Act (Public Act 094-0741)
Since January 1, 2007, Illinois law requires every residence to have at least one carbon monoxide alarm in operating condition within 15 feet of every room used for sleeping purposes. The device can be combined with a smoke detector if it emits a distinctly different alarm sound for each hazard.
The law applies to single family residences, multiple family residences, and mixed use buildings. The homeowner or building owner must supply and install the required alarms. In the case of rental properties, the landlord must ensure that all alarms are operable at the beginning of a lease period. A tenant is then responsible for testing and maintaining the devices after the lease commences.
There are some exceptions to the Act when the residential dwelling unit does not rely on fossil fuel for heat, ventilation or hot water. For more information, you can read the Act in its entirety by clicking here.
