Excerpts on Accidents in the Home1

Did you know . . .
  • approximately 1 in 17 people experience an unintentional injury each year?
  • a fatal injury occurs every 14 minutes - a disabling injury every 4 seconds?
  • in-home accidents cost the economy more than $380 billion, including medical care and loss of productivity?

Falls are the No. 1 cause of death or injury in the home. Stairs, rugs and extension cords are the top 3 on the list of culprits. Next comes carpeting, then comes slick areas (kitchen and bathroom floors). Other fall hazards include ladders and jagged furniture.

Accidents are the most preventable killers. Falls can be prevented by making your home a safe place to walk and/or maneuver around in. So, keep stairs clear and use nonskid mats. Paint or mark each step making each rung more visible. Use nonskid tiles in the kitchen and bathrooms and install grab bars for the person who needs them.

5 Home Repairs You Shouldn’t Ignore2

Use our expert advice to stop trouble in its tracks

“Don’t put off to tomorrow what you can do today”. Many would agree that procrastination can be costly - the tendency is to wait until ‘things get better’. However, some problems, when left unchecked, can lead to thousands of dollars in repairs - rebuilding a foundation wall, for example. While others, like mold contamination can compromise your family’s health.

So, here is a question for you: If there are 10 things that can go wrong with a house, how many of them have to do with water? The answer is: “15 of them” according to Bill Loden, a home inspector from Madison, Alabama. (It would seem he’s trying to make a point).

Now that water has been identified as a major cause of problems, let’s test your knowledge even further. Which of the following is the easiest way for water to enter your home? Is it: gutters and downspouts, roof and siding, cracks in the foundation, or an internal broken water pipe? For the answer and more about the high cost of procrastination . . . click here .
